Summer Reading 2014 Overview
Summer Reading is now in full swing. This will be my first summer in my new position as Director of Play to Learn Services, and it’s going to be awesome. This year New York State’s summer reading theme is “Fizz, Boom, Read!”, which is perfect given our library’s strong STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) focus. In addition to our regular storytimes and early literacy programs (Cuddletime, First Steps, and Smartplay), I have added five new programs to the summer roster. They are: Let’s Explore, Music & Movement I, Music & Movement II, Tinker Tots, PreK Art Class, and Science Storytimes (which are replacing our regular PreK storytimes, for the summer). I have broken down the programs by age and description, below.
In preparation for Summer Reading, I expanded our outreach program and visited nine area preschools, reaching over 400 families. I am hopeful that my efforts will be reflected in program attendance this year. Look for more posts, detailing each program and session.
Cuddletime: Enjoy rhymes, songs, stories and more!
First Steps: A language building program using music, movement, rhymes and stories. For toddlers up to age 3.
Let’s Explore: Color! Texture! Shapes! This program is designed for babies and is rich in sensory exploration and promotes thinking skills!

SmartPlay: Smart Play is a play program for babies through Pre-K designed to develop early literacy skills. Drop in to play with toys that will stimulate your child’s imagination.
Pre-K Art Class: Introduce kids to artists, styles, mediums and encourage self-expression, socialization and creative thinking.
Music & Movement ll: Children will sing, dance, and play musical instruments and enjoy games with bean bags, a parachute, and more!
